Because the organisation I work for is part of the ministry of Youth and Sports, it is a common sight that the minister and secretary come to pay a visit. On this occasion, they came both on different moment within a week. To be honest, it was not really spectacular, due to the fact that all speeches were in the Nepali languages and I do not speak that language really well. But still, interesting to see.

During this week, there was a training were around 70 people for trained for their qualification as a Scout Leader. In this week, they had to carry out all kinds of assignments to proof they had the required skills. For me it was a very nice opportunity to learn more about their system of training. Especially since I need this for my research. During their campfire I had the honours to teach them some Dutch words by singing Head-Shoulders-Knee-and-Toes. Even with adults this is a fun experience.

I was invited to Kathmandu to stay with the international commissioner of the Nepal Scout, Rabin Dahal. A couple of days I spend teaching about the Netherlands and I participated in their events. During my stay, I had the time to visit a tourist attraction of Bauda. Bauda is a Buddhist community in Kathmandu that is centered around a very large stoepa (Buddhist temple). Basically, the whole area is meant for tourists to buy tourist stuff. Sadly, the large temple in the centre of the community is badly damaged because of the earthquake. This photo was taken when the stoepa was in it's full glory.

During this trip, I met a friend from Japan, Moses from Uganda. Moses works for the international Scouting organisation and for his work he often visits different countries. He is also the one who put me in contact with the Nepali Scouts. Last Saturday was a time for leisure and together we visited a beautiful natural park. The ramp were a bit steep, which made the hike quite a challenge. Find the pictures of the park here.

The pictures you might have seen and you noticed that I went to get a haircut. I recommend everybody to visit the barber in this country. Simply because the experience is great. Together with my host I visited the barber, luckily for me he wanted to function as a interpreter. Firstly, your hair is thoroughly washed and scrubbed before your hair is cut. Afterwards, you are subjugated to an intense head massage that apparently helps to improve the blood circulation.

Now I am back at the centre with a couple of days of intensive project work ahead. Not everybody can afford to have a holiday ;). Anyway, I wish everybody a happy Christmas and a good new year! I will do my best to create a Christmas atmosphere upon the mountain. If I succeed, I will share with you the results!

Omdat de organisatie waar ik voor werk onderdeel is van het ministerie van Jeugd en Sport, komt het voor dat de minister en staatssecretaris van dit ministerie op bezoek komen. Deze keer kwamen ze apart van elkaar op bezoek in dezelfde week. Om eerlijk te zijn was het niet heel spectaculair, gezien alle speeches in het Nepalees waren heb ik er zo goed als niet van kunnen volgen. Maar, wel leuk om een keer mee te maken.

Tijdens deze week was er ook een training waar ongeveer 70 mensen werden opgeleid voor hun kwalificatie als Scoutingleider. In die week moesten ze van allerlei opdrachten doen om aan te tonen dat ze vaardigheden onder de knie hadden. Voor mij was het erg interessant om meer te weten te komen over Scouting vrijwilligers in Nepal. Zeker omdat dit ook nodig is voor mijn onderzoek. Om het af te sluiten, had ik de eer om met de hele groep Hoofd-Schouders-Knie-en-Teen te doen. Zelfs voor volwassenen is dit een leuke activiteit.

In Kathmandu was ik uitgenodigd door de international commissioner van de Nepal Scouts, Rabin Dahal. Een paar dagen heb ik weer les gegeven en meegedraaid in hun activiteiten. Tijdens mijn verblijf ben ik ook kort de toerist uit wezen hangen in Bauda, een boeddhistische gemeenschap in de stad. Het is eigenlijk een groot toeristencentrum waar je voornamelijk meuk kan halen. In het midden van deze wijk staat een gigantische stoepa (boeddhistische tempel) alleen deze was ernstig beschadigd door de aardbeving en nog volop in reparatie. Onderstaande foto is genomen toen de stoepa nog in volle glorie was.

Tijdens dit verblijf zag ik mijn oude vriend uit Japan, Moses uit Oeganda weer. Moses werkt voor de internationale Scouting organisatie waardoor hij vaak landen als Nepal bezoekt. Hij is ook degene die mij in contact heeft gebracht met de Nepalees Scouts. Afgelopen zaterdag was het dan ook tijd voor een beetje ontspanning en hebben we samen een natuurpark bezocht. De hellingen waren behoorlijk steil, wat de klim wel een uitdaging maakte.  Bekijk hier de foto’s die ik maakte in het park.

De foto’s heb je waarschijnlijk al gezien, maar ik ben naar de kapper geweest. Ik raad het iedereen aan om een keer naar de kapper in dit land te gaan. Simpelweg omdat de ervaring geweldig is. Samen met mijn gastheer heb ik de kapper bezocht, dus ik had gelukkig een tolk. Eerst wordt je haar flink gewassen en dan wordt de schaar erin gestoken. Na afloop word je onderworpen aan een flinke hoofdmassage waarbij de kapper letterlijk zijn knokkels op je hoofd slaat om de bloedsomloop te verbeteren, dat wordt mij verteld dan.

Nu ben ik weer terug op het centrum met een paar dagen noeste project werken voor de boeg. Niet iedereen kan kerstvakantie vieren ;). Maar goed, ik wens iedereen alvast fijne feestdagen! Ik ga mijn best doen om nog wat kerstsfeer te creëren bovenop de berg. Als ik hierin slaag, dan deel ik de resultaten!
