Shivaratri, Weddings & Pizza

In dit blog zal ik meer uitweiden over mijn recente ervaringen dan over werken in Nepal zoals ik beloofd had. Deze zal ik volgende week waarschijnlijk plaatsen. Goed nieuws, ik heb  deze weken genoeg tijd om hierover te vertellen :-). Het is een lange tijd geweest sinds mijn laatste blog, dus vergeef mijn luiheid alstublieft.

Godawari
Godawari is een botanische tuin waar veel (tropische) planten, bomen uit Azië en andere landen te vinden zijn. Klinkt misschien niet als een spectaculair uitje, maar het was op zich leuk om het een bezoekje te brengen. Het is een populaire bestemming voor Nepalezen om te bezoeken van uit Kathmandu. Dan moet ik dat dus ook maar doen volgens mijn Nepalese vrienden (foto's).

Jara
Op een donderdag (weet niet meer zo welke datum) heb ik de nieuwste vrijwilligster voor Scouting centrum opgepikt van het vliegveld. Dit houd in dat ik niet langer meer alleen hoef te werken in het centrum en dat bevalt me prima. Jara komt uit Spanje en is hier ook voor een project voor haar universiteit.

Shivaratri
Op 7 maart was Shivaratri is een belangrijk Hindoe festival waarin de god Shiva wordt vereerd over de gehele wereld. De grootste Shiva-tempel is te vinden in Kathmandu. Normaal vindt een festival overdag plaats, maar in dit geval begint dit al s’nachts. Het festival duurt van middernacht tot middernacht en de legende gaat dat als je in die tijd in de tempelgronden bent van de Pashupatinath-tempel bent, je gezegend bent voor het hele jaar. Gelukkig was dit zo in mijn geval.

 
Voor de Scouts is dit een belangrijke dag omdat ze helpen met het organiseren en begeleiden van het evenement. Er komen op deze dag geschat zo één miljoen mensen naar de tempel. De rijen vullen de straten. Ik had gedacht dat ik meer foto’s had genomen, maar ik kan ze niet meer terug vinden :-(. Wij waren uitgenodigd om dit festival van dichtbij mee te maken. Dit was erg leuk om te zien, zeker omdat je midden in de nacht de tempelgronden in kon en niet in de rij hoefde te wachten.

Pizza
Voor elke buitenlander die langer in Nepal (of Azië) verblijft slaat het op een gegeven moment toch wel toe. Het verlangen naar Westers (ongezond) eten. Het ligt er natuurlijk aan waar je zit. In de grote steden is het makkelijk verschillende soorten eten te vinden. Maar spendeer je zoals ik de meeste tijd buiten de stad, dan eet je eigenlijk alleen maar rijst. Stel jezelf voor dat je twee maanden achter elkaar bijna alleen maar rijst hebt gegeten. Af en toe wissel je dit af met momo’s, chili chicken en andere gerechten. Maar. Geen. Pizza. Of boerenkool. Toen ik deze pizza voor me had, was het gevoel onbeschrijfelijk.

Scouting opkomst
Het komt wel eens voor dat je wordt uitgenodigd om met een Scouting groep mee te draaien op een zaterdag. Deze keer was erg speciaal, omdat ik was uitgenodigd om met de groep uit Pashupatinath mee te draaien. Wat hier zo cool aan was, is dat zij hun opkomsten organiseren op de tempelgronden van Pashupatinath-tempel. Het is een hele aparte beleving om een Scouting opkomst te doen midden in een tempel gebouw. Het was erg leuk om mee te maken. Uiteraard moesten we even spelletjes uitwisselen. Ik kreeg nog een uitgebreide rondleiding over de tempelgronden en moest nog even gekust worden door een Sadhu of Baba. De foto’s kan je hier vinden.

Bruiloft
Één van mijn hoogtepunten was wel de bruiloftsreceptie die ik mee kon maken van één van mijn vrienden. Het is eerlijk gezegd niet heel verschillend van een Westerse receptie (het eten wel). Het is wel interessant om te zien en een goede kans om een feestje te vieren.

Volunteers of Kakani
Naast al het feestjes vieren, dingen bezoeken en rondhangen moet er natuurlijk ook gewerkt worden. Één van mijn taken is om ervoor te zorgen dat er meer vrijwilligers naar het centrum gaan komen. Samen met Jara ga ik hier mee bezig. Onze eerste stap was om een Facebook pagina te maken waar wij als vrijwilligers onze ervaringen delen op het centrum. Hiermee willen wij een goed idee geven hoe vrijwilligerswerk en werken aan projecten er hier uit zien. Je kan ons volgen op

Wat staat er op de planning?
Ja ja, er is meer. Ik heb nog zes weken te gaan voordat ik terug mag naar het koude, natte, kale, platte Nederland. Voordat ik ga heb nog wat plannen:

Pokhara
In het westen van Nepal ligt de stad Pokhara. Deze stad ligt aan een groot meer en is zeer populair onder toeristen. Graag wil ik daar een kijkje nemen en een bezoek brengen aan Lumbini, de geboorteplaats van Boeddha. Met een beetje geluk kan ik daar een vriend opzoeken die in de buurt woont.

Feestje
Omdat ik bijna jarig ben, moet er natuurlijk een verjaardag worden gegeven. En een excuus voor een feestje is natuurlijk altijd goed. Daarbij kan ik meteen een afscheidsfeestje geven, dus drie vliegen in één klap. Het komt waarschijnlijk neer op een barbecue, bier en pannenkoeken voor ontbijt. Klinkt prima toch?

In mijn volgende blog wil ik jullie graag vertellen wat ik hier allemaal doe aan projecten en de culture verschillen waarmee je te maken krijgt. Ik heb hier weinig over gesproken dus ik wil daar graag wat diepen op ingaan. Daarnaast vertel ik wat meer over hoe je jezelf niet gek moet laten maken (door constant rijst te moeten eten bijvoorbeeld).

In this blog I will tell you more about my recent experiences than about working in Nepal, as I promised. The latter will be published next week probobaly. Good news, I have got enough time to write both :-). It has been a long while since I published my last blog, so please forgive my laziness.

Godawari
Godawari is a botanical garden where one can find many (tropical) plants, trees from Asia and other countries. It might not seem as a very spectacular trip, but it was nice to pay it a visit. It is a popular destination for Nepali people from Kathmandu. So, I should do it as well, according to my Nepali friends (photo's).

Jara
On a Thursday (I do not recall what the exact date was) I picked up the newest volunteer for the Scout centre from the airport. That means I am no longer required to work alone in the centre, and I like that very much. Jara is from Spain, and is here in Nepal for a project of here university.

Shivaratri
On March the 7th the festival of Shivaratri took place. It is a very important Hindu festival where the lord Shiva is honoured around the world. The largest Shiva temple can be found in Kathmandu. Normally speaking, a festival takes place by day. But in this case it starts around midnight and ends 24 hours later. A legend circulates, stating that if you are within the temple grounds of the Pashupatinath-temple during those hours, you will be blessed for the rest of the year. Luckily for me, this was the case.

For the Scouts this is an important day. This is because they help organise the event. During this day, an estimated one million people visit the temple. The rows fill the streets around the temple grounds. I thought I took more photo’s of this, but I cannot retrieve them sadly :-(. We were invited to see this festival from up close. It was very interesting to see, especially since it was possible for us to visit the temple grounds at midnight. And we were able to cut the lines.

Pizza
For every foreigner who spends a longer period of time in Nepal (or Asia), they are overcome by a certain feeling. The desire for Western (unhealthy) food. It of course depends where you are. In the larger cities it is relatively easy to find Western food. However, if you spend most of your time the rural areas (such as I do), you mostly eat rice. Imagine that you have only been eating rice for the last two months. From time to time your vary with momo’s, chilli chicken and other local dishes. But. No. Pizza. Or boerenkool. When I had this pizza in front of me, the feeling was indescribable.

Scouts meeting
Sometimes it happens that you are invited to attend a Scouts meeting on a Saturday. This time it was very special, since I was invited to participate with a group from Pashupatinath. The cool thing about this, is that theur meetings are organised on the temple grounds of the Pashupatinath temple. It is a very exciting experience to witness this. Of course we exchanged some activities. I got an elaborate tour around the temple grounds and I had to receive a kiss from a Sadhu or Baba. The pictures can be found here.

Wedding
One of my highlights of this period was the wedding reception of one of my friends I was able to attend. Honestly, it is not much from different from Western receptions (the food is though). It is interesting to see and a good opportunity to celebrate another party.

Volunteers of Kakani
Besides partying and sightseeing, work also has to be done. One of my tasks is to encourage other volunteers to volunteer at the Scout Centre. Together with Jara I am working on this. Our first step was to create a Facebook page where we as volunteers share our experiences with the outside world. What are you plans?
But wait, there is more! I have six weeks left before I return to the cold, wet, barren and flat Netherlands. Before I go, I have some plans:

Pokhara
In West-Nepal, one can find the city of Pokhara. This city is located at a large lake and very popular among tourists. I would like to take a look there and also visit Lumbini, the birthplace of Buddha. With some luck, I have got time to visit one of my friends, who lives in that area.

Birthday!
Because it is almost my birthday, I have to organise a birthday party. And an excuse for a party is always good of course. It probobaly comes down to a barbecue, drinking beer and having pancakes for breakfast. Doesn’t so bad, does it?

In my next blog I want to tell you about the projects I am working on and the cultural differences I am encountering. I did not write about this that much, so I would like to elaborate on this. Besides that, I will share how you do not turn crazy in such a culture (by eating rice all the time for example).
